DEEPENING UNDERSTANDINGS OF IDENTITY THROUGH ARTMAKING

An exhibition of Brookline High School student work curated by Sabine Strauch under Supervising Practitioner Elizabeth Brennan

At Brookline High School, Ms. Brennan and I teach a wide range of media: Metals, Printmaking, and Drawing and Painting Intensive. There is a clear connection, though, across all the courses - the lessons provide students with fundamental technical skills while encouraging them to explore their identities and deepen their connections with the world, inspiring curiosity, experimentation, self-expression, and community belonging. Often, students are pleasantly surprised with the high quality of their finished work and the enjoyment they experience throughout the process. It has been an absolute pleasure to work with the students at BHS, from problem-solving a soldering malfunction, to sighting and measuring, to pulling prints through the press and so much more. I never thought a career could be so rewarding.

Please enjoy the below collection of student work, which represents just some of the joy, hard work, and transformation that occurred in our classroom this semester!

Sabine Strauch

"Art has always been present in my life. It's only because of the incredible teachers and mentors I've had over the years that my relationship with art transformed from being solely a visual experience to an integrative tool for communication, empathy, problem solving, identity exploration, and so much more. It is now my life's work to share this magic with my students!"
